PS3 was on par with the xbox for games that were designed specifically for the ps3. The issue was, utilizing the cell processor was a pain in the ass and too much work to optimize it fully. Games like God of War and such looked amazing on it. An example of a cross platform game that looked better on the PS3 was BF3. However, most cross platform games did look like garbage in comparison.
